In 1905 vertrok Molkenboer met zijn vrouw naar New York. Terwijl hij studeerde aan de The Art Students League maakte hij stadsgezichten van New York en van de ruïnes van San Francisco na de grote aardbeving van 1906. Na het winnen van een prijsvraag kreeg hij de opdracht een proscenium schildering te maken voor het nieuw te bouwen Majestic Theatre aan de South Broadway in Los Angeles. Het theater was ontworpen door Architect Alfred Rosenheim en werd in 1908 geopend. Molkenboer werkte samen met twaalf assistenten ruim een jaar aan de opdracht, die ook de decoratie van de foyer en het restaurant inhield. De officiële benaming was “Hamburger’s Majestic Theater”. Asher Hamburger was een rijke joodse zakenman, die het naar alle waarschijnkheid gefinancierd heeft. Helaas werd dit theater in 1933 gesloopt.

Thanks for all this lovely work. It’s great to see these images as there are so few photos of the Majestic’s interior. I’ve taken the liberty of adding these to my page on the theatre. One note: It appears that while Alfred Rosenheim did earlier plans for a Majestic for Oliver Morosco (in 1904), those were for a different Broadway location. Edelman and Barnett did the one that got built at 845 S. Broadway. Rosenheim did a later one for Morosco in 1913 (the Morosco, later called the Globe) which survives at 744 S. Broadway.
